Each case study introduces a particular theoretical or methodological approach to the study of fashion and gender. These include performativity, myth, the gaze, symbolic resistance, technologies of the self, and gender parody. Throughout the unit, gendered selves are shown to be fashioned in dialogue with visual culture, consumer culture, and what has come before. The unit consists of ten in-depth seminars, intended for second- or third-year undergraduate students. Students are expected to already have a foundational understanding of cultural, social, and historical issues pertaining to fashion and dress.
The discussion questions are intended to guide students through the reading exercises, encouraging them to identify key concepts and examples therein. Students are also encouraged to think about different methodological approaches that can be employed in the study of fashion and gender.
